Safety Expectations

First Rule of Safety

RULE: You are responsible for the safety of yourself and others.

When performing activities with the team you will be working with or around tools and machinery that can be dangerous if appropriate safety practices are not followed. Because of this, we take safety very seriously as a team. These rules apply to all team members.

Safety Guidelines

  • Horseplay will not be tolerated.
  • Safety glasses must always be worn when entering designated spaces, including the fabrication and wood shops.
  • Safety glasses must also be worn when working with tools and/or the robot, regardless of location.
  • Appropriate footwear — fully enclosed shoes (no sandals or flip-flops) — must be worn in the engineering lab and at competitions.
  • Hair must be tied back and clothing free of loose strings or fabric while operating any equipment, or standing near equipment in operation.
  • No food or drink in the machine shop area or near any computers.
  • Members will be trained and certified by a qualified mentor or student before using machinery independently. All members must pass a basic safety test to work with tools in the engineering lab. Visitors may not use machinery until training is completed.
  • All equipment will be handled with extreme care and caution.
  • Work areas will be kept neat and orderly.
  • No one is allowed to operate machinery alone in the room.
  • All equipment, tools, and supplies must be put away, and the classroom cleaned, at the end of each meeting.
  • Report all unsafe conditions to the OHS Robotics Coach or Teacher Advisor so they may take steps to remedy them.

Enforcement

Failure to follow these safety guidelines may be grounds for a member to be asked to leave a meeting or event. Repeated disregard, arguing, or refusal to follow safety practices may result in dismissal from the team.

Emergency contact, medication & illness

  • At least one parent/guardian must be registered with the team so we have the appropriate contact information should an emergency occur.
  • Medical information and emergency contact information will be collected on permission forms prior to any travel with the team to competitions.
  • Students taking any medication while participating in any TEAM 2137 event, meeting, or activity must make arrangements with the team coordinator, as per school policy.
  • If you become ill while at an event, transportation is at the parents'/guardians' expense using the first available transportation. It is important that you do not travel with the team if you are already ill prior to departure.
  • When an injury occurs that requires medical assistance, a mentor or designated adult will accompany the member to the physician's office or hospital, and the mentor will notify the parent/guardian registered with the team as soon as possible. School administration will also be contacted.

Injury policy

Although we make every effort to provide the safest environment for members, the potential risk of injury is always there. Oxford Community Schools will not assume responsibility or liability relative to doctor or hospital expenses. Participation on TEAM 2137 is voluntary — students may participate if they desire, but they do so at their own risk of injury. Neither mentors nor Oxford Community Schools can be named on any medical forms where medical expenses are involved.
