Description

TEAM 2137 is the Oxford High School FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team and the high school arm of Oxford Robotics, the Oxford Community Schools program that lets students in grades K–12 explore and be inspired in STEM through FIRST®.

TEAM 2137 is more than a club — it is a competition team, just like any sport or similar activity in Oxford. Participation in Oxford Robotics is a privilege and should be respected as such. The rules and standards in this handbook are a guide for successful participation, not a description of punishment: as a member of the team, you are expected to be responsible to yourself, your team, and your community.

Guiding Philosophies

  1. Engage members through maximum student involvement so they have ownership in their accomplishments. TEAM 2137 decisions and projects are predominantly student-driven through the student leadership group (the Captains), and we seek all members' input regardless of experience so the team can develop a well-rounded learning environment.
  2. Provide mentorship through an "eyes on, hands off" approach wherever possible. Mentors provide guidance and watch for areas where students need to learn a new skill, but they are not team doers. Guidance is given as constructive instruction or by demonstration, followed by the student performing the action or task.
  3. Ensure members gain long-term benefits from their experiences. TEAM 2137's goal is to produce innovators and problem solvers with skills that apply to a multitude of careers after graduating high school.
  4. Teach communication skills that aid in securing scholarships, attaining sponsorships, and spreading the message of FIRST. Members receive guidance with resumes, scholarship applications, interviewing skills, and public speaking, and learn promotional skills through PowerPoint presentations, TEAM 2137 brochures, and instructional videos.
  5. Value community involvement — TEAM 2137 is not only robot-driven; extreme value is placed on community involvement and improvement without monetary incentives. Interaction with younger students, sponsors, charities, and businesses builds relationships and brings the community together, instilling the importance of "giving back":
    • Team members mentor students in grades K–8 through robot demonstrations, workshops, engineering classes, and overall mentorship.
    • TEAM 2137 engages with the community through volunteer work.
    • We foster the growth of other FLL and FTC teams.
    • We assist in the formation and growth of other FRC rookie and veteran teams.
